The Walking Dead Dilemma

I would like to take a moment to discuss the new AMC series The Walking Dead.  Everyone is all over this zombie show, according to how many people seem to be posting about it on Facebook.  But I am not feeling it yet. I am a zombie lover.  You already read my take on the brilliant Dead Set, but it started way before that.  Zombies are the the only things that actually scare me in the realm of scary movies.  I keep flashlights and old long underwear around just in case, you know, the zombie apocalypse happens.  I once had a disagreement with a woman because she had the ridiculous idea to pack a pair of flip flops in her zombie escape kit because, as she said, they were light.  Um, you're not getting away from a swarm of zombies in a pair of flip flops, you fool!  Anyway, maybe it's because it started airing so close to Dead Set, but The Walking Dead isn't impressing me.  The zombies aren't scary, and I don't give a crap about any of the characters.  How can I feel sorry for a guy who misses his wife when his wife is such a skanky bitch?  You may say, the show has only aired twice.  Give them time!  To which I say, Dead Set had me rooting for characters I knew and loved and/or hated within the first ten minutes.  Not that I'll stop watching The Walking Dead.  I mean, there are zombies on TV every week!  But if my poor attitude towards the show doesn't change, it may go the way of Glee.  Hmmm... Zombies on Glee?  That I'd watch.

So far, I have the same feeling regarding the characters, I care about none of them. But with TV shows, I find it takes several episodes for characters to really take form. Dead Set was a little different in that it was planned as a 3 hour program.

I'm with you...I'm just being a little more optimistic.

I'm having a hard time getting into the show. But I'll keep watching the show because I'm a total zombie fanatic and will watch anything zombie related.

Brian, I wonder if our attitudes towards The Walking Dead would mirror our attitudes towards a zombie invasion: you=optimistic, me=jaded and skeptical. Kimber, that's how I feel. I'll keep watching because, yay, zombies!

As an advocate for the show, might I suggest reading the comics? Perhaps knowing where the show is going to go will help you get into it more.

I will say though that the show really isn't about the zombies and never will be. It's more about the survivors. Hence why some diehard zombie fans have had a hard time getting into it.

But we are all entitled to our opinions, but I must say I think you'd love the comic.

Ah, but you forget, my dear Maureen, that I am not only a zombie lover but a comics lover, as well. I read two volumes of the collected comic, and I was also disappointed by that. I think in both mediums I'm not connecting to any of the characters, which is a big deal in such a character-based plot. We shall see! It certainly has not reached Glee proportions.

Hehe. Well, I guess to each his own. Hope it grows on you though!

I do, too. I'm not looking forward to the hick brother plotline. Why must everyone be so stupid?

Sadly, I think most people are that stupid. lol. Hey, was it me that made the flip flop comment? lol. I think that might have been me. I've amended it. I'm now in favor of always keeping a pair of old converse in my purse. I wear heals to work too often. I'd be zombie meat.

It wasn't you, Mo! I totally remember who it was, and it was only a woman a met at a fancy dinner at a library conference. Not a librarian. Librarians are all over the sensible shoes.
