Murder is My Business

Over the weekend, my friend Katie and I attended an 80s themed murder mystery. This was not our first murder mystery together, and obviously all the practice paid off. Not only did we win Best Dressed for our costumes (more on that in a second), but we also won Detectives of the Night for guessing the murderer and having the best explanation! Here's a picture of the two of us with our awards, along with one of the stars of the show:
And here is me interrogating one of the suspects, known as Skull:
Doesn't he look intimidated by my probing mind?

So how did we win Best Dressed? Katie had on some great eye makeup and a funky fresh outfit. Me? I don't know if I deserved the win. I found a pair of sunglasses that I guess were reminiscent of Tom Cruise in "Risky Business," and my t-shirt was a hideous horror convention shirt that I couldn't put on until I left my house so I wouldn't scare my daughter. On top of that was the kicker: my genuine, hideous, jean jacket from 1988. It was that light blue color that only existed in the 80s (I hope), along with contrasting, striped cuffs and collar. Eeeewww. On it I had stitched a U2 patch, and on the back was a gigantic British flag. And the jacket was HUGE. Every time I looked in the mirror at the murder, I had to ask myself if I was ever that large or if we just dressed in really big clothes in the 80s. I am hoping for the latter.

Weekend Nerdery

I guess I've been too busy momming it up to realize the power of nerdy awesomeness this upcoming weekend will bring. Saturday, the hubs, kiddo, and I will attend C2E2, a newer comic book convention in Chicago. Romy will wear her new Spiderman costume, this one with open eye holes (her other one has mesh eyes, which I thought would be asking for accidents and headaches) plus massive muscles. I will wear one nerdy shirt or another, depending on my mood for the day (Buffy, D&D, The Guild? So many choices!). The grandest moment will surely be when we meet David Newell, aka Mr. McFeely from Mr. Rogers. And my longest-standing movie crush, Noah Hathaway, will be there (I waited 36 years to meet him last summer, and now here he is again?). Let us relive the glorious moments of our original meeting (How many times must we relive this, Julie? As many as it takes before I stop laughing at the brilliance of it all!)

Other random guests at C2E2? John Cusack, Sean Astin, and Val Kilmer! Will I meet any of those guys? No. Unless John Cusack and I run into each other, and he's all, "Hey, weren't you an extra in High Fidelity?" And I'm all, "Yeah." Yeah. Although, I don't know if I'll be able to resist whispering "Chester Copperpot" to Sean Astin.

The other nerdly event this weekend will be my third (fourth?) professional murder mystery event. "Professional," as opposed to the kind you can play at your house from a box (also completely awesome and worthy of everyone's time). This one has a 1980s theme which should be easy but is proving to be very difficult in the costume department. I may have to visit a thrift store. Why couldn't I have just saved all my clothes from my childhood? I am thinking I will go with little gym shorts (because my legs are SO awesome), a kitschy t-shirt, tube socks, and a side ponytail? Poo. I don't know. If only I could commit as fully as this guy from my last murder mystery:

I should note that he was at a non-themed murder mystery I was at. Brilliant.

And let's not forget the Titanic miniseries AND Game of Thrones. Yowza! What a weekend! I better go power up with some snickerdoodles.

The Catch-Up Blog

Not to be confused with the Ketchup blog (and certainly not the catsup blog. I would NEVER spell it that way). I don't know why I've been gone so long from blogging. I think sometimes when I watch reruns of TV shows instead of new episodes, it makes me feel less current. Or something. And my daughter has been waking up too early, so not much blogging time there. Today I'll just come up with a bunch of random items of happenings (um, yeah), and then hopefully I can focus the blog to my usual highly focused standards (um, yeah) again soon.
  • New basement carpeting is in. All that's left to do is bring all the furniture back, put all of the books back on the shelves, clean out the crawl space, and clean the entire house. Plus the garage. Weeeeee!
  • I have decided I don't love when the weather is in the 40s or 50s. Maybe I just don't have the appropriate spring coat. I have tons for really cold, and a few for closer-to-warm, but not the right springtime flava.
  • I have started watching Battlestar Gallactica. I'm enjoying it but don't love it yet. There are many likable characters, which is what I normally look for in a show. And thank goodness Starbuck's hair changed after the miniseries.
  • I sold back a few books on Amazon, but now I can't find a box to fit them in to ship them back. What to do, what to do?
  • Fannie May chocolate marshmallow eggs rock my world.
  • This weekend is Passover. Passover is my favorite Jewish holiday. Just so you know.
  • While cleaning out the basement, I found a randomly hilarious box of pictures from my life. This is one of my favorites:

That's me graduating from high school. Aside from being a rather unflattering picture of me, my expression is HILARIOUS. I feel like I should have a caption contest. If you think of one, feel free to post in the comments.
